Solid Dosage Forms-Doxymax

Composition:

Each capsule of Doxymax contains 100 mg doxycycline.

Properties:

Doxymax belongs to a group of medicines called tetracycline antibiotics. It is also known as a broad-spectrum antibiotic.

Indications:

Doxymax used to treat a wide range of infections caused by bacteria these include:

  • Respiratory tract infections.
  • Urinary and genital infections.
  • Infections of the eye and acne vulgaris.
  • Malaria and cholera.
  • For the prevention of typhus.

Dosage:

The recommended dose is for at least 10 days unless otherwise directed by the doctor:

  • The usual dose for acute infections in adults is 200 mg on the first day (as a single dose or divided into two equal doses with a twelve-hour interval). followed by a maintenance dose of 100 mg/day.
  • For severe infections 200 mg per day.
  • Genital infections: 100 mg twice per day for 7-10 days.
  • Malaria: 200 mg per day for at least 7 days, should be given

with other drugs such as quinine.

  • For the prevention of typhus: 200 mg as a single dose.
  • Cholera: 300 mg once as a single dose adjunct to fluid and

electrolyte replacement.

Doxymax should be swallowed with plenty of fluid.

If gastric irritation occurs, it should be given with food or milk.

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to doxycycline, minocycline or tetracycline.
  • Children under 12 year old.
  • Severe hepatic disorders.

Side effects:

These side effects may occur such as:

  • Headache and blurred vision.
  • Gastrointestinal tract disorders: stomach pain, loss of appetite,

diarrhea, difficulty swallowing and discoloration of teeth.

  • Changes in liver function tests and increase an urea in the blood.
  • Muscles or joints pain.

Precautions:

Tell the doctor in these cases:

  • Pregnancy and breast-feeding
  • Porphyria (a genetic disorder of the blood)
  • Myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness, difficulty chewing and

swallowing and slurred speech)

  • Rash (especially on the face) and sensitivity to sunlight

Drug interactions:

Tell the doctor if you take other medicines such as:

  • Warfarin
  • Penicillin or rifampicin
  • Antacids containing aluminium, calcium or magnesium
  • Epilepsy drugs such as phenobarbital and carbamazepine
