Composition
Each film coated tablet of Metformax tablets contains: Metformin Hydrochloride 500 mg or 850 mg. Properties: Metformax is an antihyperglycemic agent (biguanide) which improves glucose tolerance in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and lowering postprandial plasma glucose. Metformax decreases hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose and improves insulin sensitivity. Indications: Metformax used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults and pediatric patients 10 years of age and older with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Dosage
Adults: - The recommended starting dose is 500 mg orally twice a day or 850 mg once a day. This dose may increased in increments of 500 mg weekly or 850 mg every 2 weeks on the basis of glycemic control up to a Max. dose of 2550 mg/day, given in 3 times a day. * Pediatric patients 10 years of age and older: - The recommended starting dose of Metformax is 500 mg orally twice a day. This dose may increased in increments of 500 mg weekly on the basis of glycemic control up to a Max. of 2000 mg per day, given in divided doses twice daily. Metformax should be given with meals.
Contraindications
Metformax is not used in these cases: - Hypersensitivity to Metformin Hydrochloride. - Diabetic ketoacidosis with or without coma. - Severe renal impairment. - Liver disease or heart failure.
Side effects
These side effects rarely occur such as: - GIT disorders such as: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, flatulence and indigestion. - Asthenia. - Headache. .
Precautions
Tell your doctor in these cases: - Vitamin B 12 deficiency. - Hypoglycemia with concomitant use with insulin. - Pregnancy and breast feeding
Drug Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take other medicines such as: - Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors. - Ranolazine and cimetidine. - Insulin. - Drugs affecting glycemic control such as: diuretics, phenytoin, corticosteroids, thyroid products and oral contraceptives. Package: - Each box of Metformax 500 mg contains: 2 × 10 Tablets. - Each box of Metformax 500 mg contains: 10 × 10 Tablets. - Each box of Metformax 850 mg contains: 3 × 10 Tablets. Storage: Store at a temperature below 30 ºC.
